From September 2020, Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RSE) became a statutory part of the National Curriculum. At Loyola, we follow the diocesan programme Journey in Love to enhance our RSE provision. This scheme, adopted by the Governors at Much Woolton Catholic Primary School, is the recommended programme for Catholic schools. It is designed to ensure that children build their knowledge and awareness year on year and complements the Religious Education, PSHE, and Science curricula taught at the school.
As children progress through school, they naturally learn more about themselves and the world around them. At Loyola, we foster this curiosity in a safe and stimulating environment, supporting every child in their development. Our mission, guided by Gospel values of truth and respect, aims to help each child understand their unique journey as a child of God.
Central to our curriculum is learning about our faith, understanding ourselves, our role in the community, and developing holistically—spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically. A Journey in Love supports this, guiding the boys through friendship, family, community, relationships, and spirituality as they grow as young Catholics.
The programme is age-appropriate and delivered sensitively, taking into account the maturity of the children. Lessons include opportunities for questions, which are addressed thoughtfully and respectfully.
Parents have the right to withdraw their child from the RSE elements of the curriculum; however, this does not apply to statutory Science lessons. For further clarification, please contact:
Journey in Love is based on the belief that all people are made in the image and likeness of God. Gender and sexuality are seen as gifts from God, reflecting divine beauty and creativity.
For children to develop healthy and meaningful relationships, they need to be comfortable with themselves and grow in self-awareness. Each year group explores aspects of the mystery of love, encouraging children to appreciate the wonder of God’s creative love. Through carefully structured tasks, activities, and reflections, the programme supports physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development at every stage of the primary years.
