Rudiments Enjoy a Meaningful Day of Reflection at Walsingham House

Last Friday, Rudiments enjoyed a truly special day on retreat at Walsingham House at Abbotswick, a beautiful spiritual centre run by the Brentwood Catholic Youth Service (BCYS). Set in the peaceful Essex countryside, the retreat offered the boys a chance to step away from their busy routines and spend time reflecting, praying, and growing in their faith together.

Loyola boys prayingMrs O’Rourke, who accompanied the boys on the retreat, shared her delight at how well the day went:

"It was a pleasure to spend the day with Rudiments on Retreat last Friday. A unique spiritual experience for all, it was a wonderful opportunity to reflect and share a special time together growing in Faith. Our time spent in the Chapel was a highlight and it was a privilege to observe the boys conduct themselves in such a respectful way as they listened beautifully, lit individual candles and wrote their own prayers to God. The boys were a credit to Loyola and the whole day will remain as a very special memory.”

Throughout the day, the boys took part in engaging activities designed to deepen their understanding of faith and community. There was plenty of fun and laughter too, as the retreat leaders encouraged participation through games and discussions — all with meaningful connections to the Gospel and the message of Jesus.

Loyola Prep boy lighting a candleWilliam summed up the experience perfectly, saying:

“Simply amazing! This holy school trip was one of the most memorable ever. The calmness within the walls was sensational. Learning more about God in the most fun way you could imagine — what more could you ask for? Also, the welcoming team made you feel cosy and made everything fun. Like I said at the beginning, simply amazing!”

For many of the boys, the quiet time in the Chapel was the most memorable part of the day. Aanav shared:

“We went to this amazing retreat, where my knowledge and understanding of God was definitely increased. My favourite part was the Chapel — a resting and calming place, a place where you can pray to God and also reflect. We lit candles and wrote intentions to God. I clearly had a feeling God was there, watching us. This was definitely an amazing trip.”

Loyola boys playing gamesJerry also reflected warmly on the day:

“Last Friday I had the best school trip ever. We played lots of games linked to Jesus and then we got the chance to pray in the Chapel. It was amazing.”

The retreat was a truly enriching experience — one that combined joy, friendship, and faith in a setting that inspired both peace and reflection. The Rudiments boys returned to school uplifted, grateful, and more connected to their faith and to one another.

The staff and boys of Loyola extend their sincere thanks to the team at Walsingham House for their warmth, hospitality, and inspiration throughout the day.
